Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bridge?

Bridge is a fun, strategic card game played with four players in two partnerships. It’s part logic, part memory, and a whole lot of social interaction. It’s like mental gymnastics—with friends!

Do I need to know how to play cards?

Not at all! If you know what hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs are, you’re off to a great start. We’ll teach you everything you need to know, step by step.

Is Bridge difficult to learn?

Like many great games, Bridge is easy to learn but can take time to master. The basics can be picked up quickly—especially with our beginner-friendly lessons and supportive community.

What should I bring?

Just your curiosity and enthusiasm! We’ll provide cards, teaching materials, and snacks.

Do I need to bring a partner?

No. No partner is needed for the open day or beginner lessons. If you have some experience we can help you find a partner to join in.

Is there an age limit?

Bridge is for everyone—students, young professionals, retirees, and everyone in between. If you enjoy puzzles or games like chess or sudoku, you’ll probably love Bridge.

Why should I try Bridge?

Bridge is a fantastic way to keep your brain sharp, meet new people, and have a lot of fun. It’s been shown to improve memory and concentration—and it’s seriously addictive (in the best way!).

How long does a game take?

A single hand of bridge generally takes a few minutes. A typical contract bridge session takes a few hours – so a pleasant way to spend an afternoon or evening. You can play casually or competitively—it’s up to you.

I’ve never played a game like this. Is that okay?

Absolutely. Bridge is perfect for beginners. If you like puzzles, word games, or chess, you’ll probably love Bridge!

Is it expensive to play?

Not at all. In fact, it is one of the cheapest hobbies you can take up! Most beginner classes and club sessions are low-cost, and your first few visits may even be free. Ask us about any introductory offers! A normal session costs £2-4.

Do people play online?

Yes! Many players enjoy both in-person and online bridge. Once you know the basics, you can join online games any time of day, which makes practice super easy.

Is Bridge competitive?

It can be—but it doesn’t have to be! There’s a friendly, social side to Bridge that many people love. If you like competition, there are plenty of partnership and team tournaments too at club, county and national levels.

What if I make mistakes?

That’s how everyone learns! All bridge players make mistakes. As you learn more you will probably start to make fewer! Bridge clubs are full of people who remember being beginners. You’ll always be supported and encouraged.

How often can I play?

Most clubs offer regular sessions weekly or even several times a week. You can play as often (or as casually) as you like.

Will I fit in?

Definitely. The club is welcoming to all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. People can chat or focus on the cards. There is no requirement to be socially adept.

What should I wear?

Wear something you feel comfortable in. Generally casual or smart casual is fine.
